This is a hands-on workshop in which you will work directly with plant material in creating a pot of natural dye, and in preparing a silk scarf for the ecoprint process. The finished bandana and scarf are yours to take home! Full class description below.

Introduction to Natural Dyes and Ecoprinting
Curious about Natural Dyes and Ecoprinting? Join me and other interested folks to learn the basics of transferring color from plants to fabric. In this hands-on workshop, you will create a pot of natural dye to tie-dye a cotton bandana, as well as design a botanically printed silk scarf. The completed bandana and scarf are yours to keep!
We will also cover how to prepare fabric for dying, which fabrics take natural dyes best, and discuss plant matter that can be used for natural dyes, many of which may be found in your home or local grocery store.
Bring a bag lunch to eat while the fabrics are dying. During the break, I will will address any questions you have as well as provide samples to examine, and books to peruse.
All supplies for the workshop itself will be provided. However, feel free to bring any non-toxic leaves or flowers from your garden for the ecoprint portion. Maple leaves, Plum leaves, and Red-bud leaves work well, as do coreopsis, marigold, and dark rose petals. While colors from many other flowers tend to be less lightfast, they may be fun to try.
Kathy Goss is a Watercolorist and Natural Dye artist living and working in Oakland, CA. When working with watercolors, she tends towards a realistic style. Working with natural dyes allows her to explore a more abstract, improvisational approach. Kathy spends as much time as possible in nature, as it is her primary source of inspiration. When outdoors, she finds herself thinking “How would I create that color in watercolors?,” and also “What color would that plant create as a natural dye?” She shares her enthusiasm for discovery by leading workshops on Natural Dyes and Ecoprinting.
